Description

This image is of the basalt columnar waterfall Svartifoss (Black falls) in Skaftafell Iceland. Svartifoss is a rare waterfall flowing over hexagonal lava basalt columns. The rocks sharp edges remain because they continue to break off faster than the water can erode their edges. This waterfall feeds from the massive Vatnajokull Glacier that covers 8% of the country.
